What we bring to your property

Directvalue provides comprehensive gardening services tailored to the specific needs of each property type. We work with suburban homeowners, cottage gardeners, and commercial property managers throughout Ottawa and the surrounding areas.

Our approach combines horticultural knowledge with practical maintenance strategies. Whether you're looking to establish a new garden from bare soil or restore an overgrown plot to its former character, we develop plans that account for your property's conditions, your time constraints, and your long-term goals.

We serve clients who appreciate well-maintained outdoor spaces but prefer to delegate the ongoing work to professionals. Our team handles everything from seasonal planting schedules to structural garden elements, allowing you to enjoy your property without the weekend labor.

Areas of focus

Each property type presents distinct requirements. Here's how we approach them.

For cottage plots

Cottage gardens require a particular sensibility—productive vegetable beds, cutting flowers, and informal plantings that thrive with periodic rather than constant attention. We design and maintain cottage plots that balance visual appeal with practical yields. Our services include soil preparation, seasonal planting rotations, and maintenance visits timed around your cottage stays.

For country homes

Larger rural properties present both opportunities and challenges. We work with country homeowners to create manageable garden zones within expansive landscapes. Our services address perennial borders, ornamental trees, kitchen gardens, and the transition areas between cultivated space and natural surroundings. We develop maintenance schedules that keep properties presentable year-round.

For townhouses

Urban and suburban townhouses often feature compact outdoor spaces where every square foot matters. We specialize in making small gardens feel spacious and functional through thoughtful plant selection, vertical elements, and efficient layouts. Container gardens, courtyard plantings, and low-maintenance perennial schemes are common solutions we implement for townhouse properties.

For commercial properties

Commercial landscapes require consistent presentation and durability. We provide maintenance programs for office parks, retail frontages, and institutional grounds. Our commercial services include seasonal color rotations, shrub maintenance, turf care, and hardscape upkeep. We work within your operational schedule to minimize disruption to tenants and visitors.

For new developments

Newly constructed properties often arrive with minimal landscaping or builder-grade plantings that need replacement. We help new homeowners establish gardens from the ground up, addressing soil amendment, drainage considerations, and plant selection suited to the site's exposure and conditions. We can phase installations to align with your budget timeline.

For neglected gardens

Properties that have been unattended for seasons or years require a different approach than routine maintenance. We assess overgrown gardens to identify salvageable plants, remove invasive species, rebuild soil structure, and develop restoration plans. Some neglected gardens contain mature specimens worth preserving; others benefit from a fresh start. We evaluate each situation individually.

How it works

A straightforward process from initial conversation to ongoing care.

1

Site assessment

We begin with a visit to your property to understand its current condition, soil type, sun exposure, drainage patterns, and existing plantings. This assessment forms the foundation for any recommendations we make. We also discuss your preferences, time availability, and what you hope to achieve with your outdoor space.

2

Proposal development

Based on the site assessment and our conversation, we prepare a written proposal outlining the scope of work, timeline, and associated costs. For larger projects, we may present phased options. The proposal includes plant recommendations suited to your property's conditions and your maintenance preferences.

3

Implementation

Once you approve the proposal, we schedule the work according to seasonal appropriateness. Spring and fall are typically optimal for major plantings, though certain tasks can proceed year-round. We coordinate delivery of materials and manage the installation process with minimal disruption to your daily routine.

4

Establishment care

New plantings require attention during their first season to ensure successful establishment. We provide follow-up visits to monitor plant health, adjust watering as needed, and address any issues that arise. This period is critical for long-term garden success and is included in our project planning.

5

Ongoing maintenance

Many clients transition to a regular maintenance arrangement after initial installation. We offer seasonal and monthly maintenance programs tailored to your property's needs. These visits cover pruning, weeding, fertilization, pest monitoring, and seasonal tasks like spring cleanup and fall preparation.

Quick answers

How do you determine what plants will work on my property?

We evaluate your site's specific conditions including sun exposure throughout the day, soil composition, drainage, and microclimate factors. We then match these conditions to plant species with appropriate hardiness ratings for the Ottawa region. Your maintenance preferences also influence our recommendations.

Can you work with an existing garden design or do you start fresh?

We do both. Many properties have established plantings worth preserving and enhancing. We assess what's currently in place, identify plants that are thriving versus struggling, and develop a plan that builds on existing strengths while addressing problem areas. Complete redesigns are an option when warranted.

What's involved in your maintenance programs?

Maintenance programs are customized to each property. Standard services include seasonal pruning, weeding, mulch application, fertilization, pest and disease monitoring, and seasonal cleanup. We establish a visit schedule based on your garden's complexity and your expectations for its appearance.

How far in advance should I contact you for spring work?

For spring installations and major projects, we recommend reaching out in late winter to schedule site assessments. This allows time for planning, ordering any specialty plants, and securing a place in our spring work schedule. Maintenance clients are typically scheduled on a recurring basis.

Do you provide services during winter months?

Our active gardening season runs primarily from spring through fall. During winter, we can conduct planning consultations, prepare designs for spring implementation, and address structural projects that don't involve planting. Seasonal services resume when ground conditions permit in spring.
